WAYS INTO CHOREOGRAPHY

How to move away from a superficial and formulaic response

AIMS

Taking inspiration from the creative processes of various choreographers, this resource will provide strategies that encourage and enable in-depth and rich responses to choreography for A-Level Dance. It aims to bridge the gap between GCSE level responses to choreography and better prepare students who will continue to study choreography at higher education levels.

HIGHLY IMAGINATIVE AND INVENTIVE RESPONSES IN

A-LEVEL CHOREOGRAPHY

THE HOW

This resource is designed to provide guidance to enable teachers to confidently navigate and lead a class through a process reflective of the group choreography component for the AQA A-Level Dance qualification.

Alternatively, it can also be used sporadically and applied to any choreography lesson context, to give insight to pupils into the many ways into choreography.

THE PROCESS

  1. Independent research, investigation and contextual understanding.

  2. Improvisation, experimentation and movement generation.

  3. Choice, selection of movement components, manipulation, structure of material, aural & physical setting and use of dancers.

  4. Rehearsal and direction

  5. Program note writing

  6. Performance
