PRACTICE
QUESTION

Choreograph a dance based on the exploration of the themes and imagery in the poem Still I Rise by Maya Angelou (1928 -2014).

Homework Task

Individually, students must collate their own research in response to this question.

Teaching Notes
Advise the students to make their research thorough and in-depth. They must show evidence that after this process they have more than a superficial understanding of the themes and imagery in the poem. Always direct them back to the original wording of the question so that their research does not divert into a related tangent. Remind them that Wikipedia is not a sufficient source for this task.

Predicted Outcomes
It is likely that students will underestimate the level of depth required at this stage in the choreographic process (especially in comparison to that required at GCSE). Once they have attempted their own investigations, model the appropriate level of depth required through the use of the attached resource and group discussion.

Suggested Formats
Assess the quality of research by:
1. Carousel method through group discussion (apply appropriate questioning for extra support or challenge).
2. Group mind map - Working in small groups pupils must combine their research and present a visual representation of this on A3 paper (model mind map provided in the resource can be used for support and pupils can complete this task individually for extra challenge).
