Inspired by the choreographic processes of Wayne Mcgregor and Theo Clinkard, Step 2 will offer various ways into movement creation in response to the practice question. 

Introduction

All choreographers have their unique creative processes and ways of choreographing work. These tend to vary across genres with some choreographers entering a workspace with a motif and teaching didactically and other choreographers working collaboratively with their dancers, often directing them through creative tasks and encouraging them to freely interpret  movement. There is no right or wrong, however pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and trying different modes of choreographing will give you greater depth and richer, inventive work.

Teaching Notes

For extra support stop the video where needed and breakdown the methods used. It is expected that some pupils will have experienced similar ways of working (especially those with advanced training and CAT scheme access), whilst others may have not experienced dance as abstract in nature.The video can be broken up into sections and does not need to be viewed in its whole capacity.

Teaching Notes 
Key points - Clinkard works very much in collaboration with his dancers. He speaks of his work as 'portraiture of the people who are in the piece'. He describes his style and aesthetic as 'work from the body of the body'. We can conclude that improvisation plays a large role in Clinkard's process.

Task 2 - Doctor Doctor

Teaching notes

​

1. Students are to stand in a circle, holding hands and facing inwards. 

2. When directed by the teacher, they are to improvise & slowly move into the centre of the circle, keeping hold of each others hands.

3. As they approach the centre they are to become tangled by moving under or over each others interlaced arms, until they find a moment of tension or struggle.
4. They should pause in this place and experiment with levels to create a visually interesting frame. 

5. The teacher will call out the name of an individual who can let go of the hands and move out of the frame to either perform a triumphant motif or to explore the frame to physically 'rise' up. 
6. Once finished the individual finds their way back and reconnects hands, the entire group will improvise to find their way back to the original circle (letting go of hands if need be). 

7. Repeat the cycle so others have a turn to break away, consider spatial and dynamic features for more interesting outcomes.
